Last Minute Lessons: Purpose of Life

I get to give a lesson in the morning about the purpose of life to a room full of teenage girls!  I am actually really excited to share what I have learned through my studies.  This past Christmas I was slammed with the loss of my sweet friend, while remembering the tragic loss of several friends this past year and family members we have been struggling several years to live without.  There were two particular addresses shared in relation to the purpose of life that really helped me with this lesson.  One was from Thomas S. Monson, The Race of Life, and the other by Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Of Regrets and Resolutions.

Both of these talks mentioned the importance of looking at life, perhaps, from the end.  What, when your life is over, will you wish you did differently?  What will you be so happy you did?  What kind of things do you want remembered about you?  Now is the time to be that person.  Today is the day to make the changes, clean out your personality closet and be who you want to be in the end.  It is just too easy to get caught up in the craziness of life and suddenly find yourself far from the path you planned on traveling.

Near the end of his address, Uchtdorf talks about letting ourselves be happy in life by finding the good in each day.  He says,

I really loved the quote he used, "One sees clearly only with the heart.  Anything essential is invisible to the eyes."  I followed the footnotes to look up where he found that quote.  I was lead to a children's book and made a crazy discovery.  In order to understand more, you must know that Dieter F. Uchtdorf is a pilot.  The author of the book, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was a pilot in 1943.  The book is The Little Prince.  Apparently the author wrote the book just one year before he died in a plane crash.  {source}

Please forgive my copy&pastiness here, but it is late and I am too brain-dead to reword what I have read.  I found the following clip on ABEbooks.com:

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in 1943, only a year before his Lockheed P-38 vanished over the Mediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. More than a half century later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none of its power. The narrator
is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts are interrupted one day by the apparition of a little, well, prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. In the face of an overpowering mystery, you don't dare disobey, the narrator recalls. Absurd as it seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of my pocket. And so begins their dialogue, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions.

The Little Prince describes his journey from planet to planet, each tiny world populated by a single adult. It's a wonderfully inventive sequence, which evokes not only the great fairy tales but also such monuments of postmodern whimsy as Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. And despite his tone of gentle bemusement, Saint-Exupéry pulls off some fine satiric touches, too.

Please realize I only discovered the book tonight and I have not seen or read it myself, but it is certainly the newest book on my to-read list :0}  And as a children's book, it will be one that Emmalee and I explore together snuggled closely on the couch under a warm fleece blanket in the near future.

Until then, here are the little handouts I made to go along with the lesson using the quote mentioned above.
I found these adorable blister party favors in the clearance section at Archivers, our local scrapbook store.  I found them just before Christmas, and now Archivers is out of business!!!  I searched online for where you would be able to find them, just in case you wanted some....and I can't find them!!!

All I found was that they are by Bo Bunny.  The are called Bo Bunny Clear Party Favors and the last post I can find where anyone mentioned them is this one by TheJoyofCrafting.  Soooooo...

Check your local scrapbook store to see if you can find them in the clearance section ;0}  In the meantime, my girls are going to each get a favor to remind them to look at life with their heart and not their eyes.  Find the joy in the journey, cause life is HARD but there is so, SO much good in life if we will seek it.

Have a great Sunday.  Take a little time to enjoy the simple things of your day ;0}

Game of Life Handout

My lesson this week for the girls at church was about the importance of gaining an education and learning all you can to prepare for the life in front of you.  When I was thinking about how to teach this principle, all I could think about was the game Life.  I HATE the game Life.  My kids LOvE to play that game, but for me, adding pretend student loans to my REAL student loans is not fun ;0}

Regardless, the game of Life is fun for kids, so I adapted my lesson so that we could play the game along with learning about life-long learning at the same time.

I wanted to make a little thought card that would remind the girls of the things we talked about.  After picking pieces apart in my mind, here is the Life game spinning wheel I came up with.

I took each piece of the wheel and made a silhouette cut file that corresponded to each color.  I have each cut file listed below available for free download from my Dropbox Folder.

First, I cut the green background with the Life-GreenBack file.  Then, I used the Life-Color file to cut one pie-like circle out of each of the 10 colors of vinyl used for the rainbow part of the wheel.  I recently purchase a variety pack of vinyl colors on Amazon and have LOvED having the selection lying around for times like this!

Lastly I cut the Life-White file to cut all the remaining pieces of the spinning wheel.  Once all the white pieces were cut out of cardstock, I stacked them up, inked all the edges, then glued the pieces in place.

TaDah!
A Life-like spinning wheel.

I printed out the thought cards and cut them apart, inking all the edges before reaching for the glue.

I just printed it on my home printer due to time, but really wish I had the time to have it printed up at Office Max.  The print is really so much sharper it is totally worth the hassle to have them printed.

The cut cards were glued to the front and I was ready to teach the lesson.  I thought for a while about putting the thought on the back, but I wanted the words visible from the front in hopes the lesson reminder would end up on a mirror or somewhere where it could be seen and remembered.

As far as the lesson played out like a game, I had the youngest girl in the room put the board together, the oldest was our banker.  One other girl was in charge of the cards.  We skipped any insurance or paying for lack of insurance.  I printed out the following prompt cards.
Please note that my printer is on it's way out, and for some reason will not print a whole page :0}  I can usually get the first 2/3 of a page to print, so for these cards, they are only printed on 2/3 of the page {teehee}.  I just figured I would throw them on here so you can see what I used for the lesson part of a game turn.

So for game play, we divide the girls into two groups.  ***Please understand that you will not have time in a normal lesson schedule to finish if you have two teams.  My original plan was to have just one team and we would all be on the same team.

Since the lesson was about getting an education, both teams went the education route and received their student loans.  When it was a team's turn, they would take a prompt card {the ones I made} and read them or the scripture listed on the card to the class.  For the scriptures, I asked them to read the verse{s} listed and then express in their own words what the scripture meant.  After that, the rest of the cards were quotes from an article I read and each is followed up by a question relating to the quote.

Once the card was read and question answered, or in other words, once their learning happened, they were allowed to progress through {the game of} life by spinning the wheel to determine the number of spaces they could advance.  For the sake of time {I was really trying to get through that game} each team actually went double the spaces rolled, still stopping their turn once they came to a stop sign on the board.  To make this clearer to you, If they spun a 6, they would move their car 6 spaces, do whatever it said to do on the space, then they went another six spaces and did whatever it said as well.

For the first half of the game, they pretty much came to a stop sign with every, to every other move.  Sorry if you have not played the game Life before.  If you haven't you are probably a bit confused about all my babbles.

Whatever event they landed on, they paid or collected the suggested funds, but they also had to name a blessing that might come from the listed event.  It was funny because one team landed on everything good, right up until they landed on "You had Twins!" anyway :0}  The other team had car crash after mishap pretty much the whole game.  Once, they spun the wheel and got a 10, but since the other team had the job of police officer{and the game states that if you are the police officer you collect $10,000 from anyone who rolls a 10 {gets caught speeding}}, and we were playing that you went twice on what you spun, the poor girls had to pay the $10,000 twice!

I passed out a "life" tile with each life experience after they listed what a blessing was for the given event.  Every once in a while the girls gave just amazingly insightful responses to the questions and were spontaneously awarded $5,000 for their fabulousness.

Anyway, we got about half way through the cards and our time was up.  I drove the two cars together to the pearly gates at the end of the game and landed my huge bowl of Halloween candy smack in the middle of the game board.  I shared that even though we all have different circumstances in life, we all have the same reward for faithfully pulling through the good and the bad in life, thus every one got candy in the end.

This was a very successful lesson, I have to say.  I had more participation from my group of girls, and even adult leaders, than ever before.  We played, we talked and discussed, and really had a blast together.

Let me know if you have any questions.  I would love to answer any you might have, otherwise, I am off to try once again to get some sleep.  I keep praying that this cold will go away and I can finally sleep through the night without a coughing fit forcing me out of bed.  I went to the doctor on Friday to get a prescription to help my symptoms, and they informed me I could not have an antibiotic for a sinus infection until I had suffered through it for 10 days.  Nice.  So, Tuesday I can finally go back to the doctor and get the medicine I need.  Looking forward to that!!!

Fast and Easy Recipies

I was asked to teach a class tonight demonstrating 3-4 fast and easy recipes families can make up on a crazy kind of school night.  I figure, since I went to all the work of typing up the recipes I might as well throw them on the blog too.  I have included all of these recipes under the recipes tab on my blog, but here they are in a post too :0)

Biggest point of the night- You can save yourself SO MUCH TIME by cooking all your meat at once.  I throw a whole family sized package of boneless skinless chicken breasts in the crockpot and cook it all at once.  I also do hamburger this way.  Crazy I know, but it totally saves me time!!!!  I don't wash a frying pan each night after standing over the stove for 20 minutes+.  I just use the crockpot, then divide the meat up into sandwich baggies and freeze it already cooked.  That means that any of the recipes below can be thrown together in 5 minutes or less {as long as I remember to thaw the meat.  If not, it takes 3 minutes in the microwave on high to thaw the meat enough to add to a recipe}.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Tonight I will be showing the Tortilla Stack, Taco Soup, Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, and Mamma's Meatloaf {baked in muffin tins and topped with mashed potatoes done up frosting style-Dinner can be fun some times too :0}

Chicken Enchilada Casserole
2 c. cubed or shredded chicken                                  2 cans of cream of chicken soup
1 large can of green enchilada sauce                            1 can of diced green chilies
1 pint sour cream or plain yogurt                                 1 package of small corn tortillas
2c. shredded cheddar cheese

Mix the following in bowl- Chicken, double can of cr. chicken soup, one large can of green enchilada sauce, one large can green chilies, one pint sour cream.  Now, layer the ingredients like lasagna, starting with just a little sauce to get the bottom wet.  Lay 6 corn tortillas across the bottom of a 9x13 pan.  It is ok for the tortillas to overlap in some places.   Top the tortillas with a sprinkling of cheese.  Now repeat: sauce, tortillas, cheese.  Keep repeating layers until you get about one inch from the top of the pan.  Sprinkle with cheese and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.  If there is extra sauce I usually just freeze it for next time.  *note- if your family prefers flour tortillas use those.  I have also crunched up the end of a bag of tortilla chips and used that instead of tortillas.

Chicken Enchiladas
2 c. cubed or shredded chicken                                 2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 can of diced green chilies                                        2c. Shredded Cheddar Cheese
½ c. Sour Cream or plain yogurt                                Package of flour tortillas {10-12 per pan}
½ c. milk

Mix the following in bowl- Chicken, double can of Cr. chicken soup, one can green chilies, ½ c. sour cream, 1 1/2 cup cheddar cheese.  Take 1/3 of the filling mix and set aside.  Now, take a flour tortilla and spread about 1/4c. of the filling into the flour tortilla.  Roll the tortilla up around the filling and place it in the bottom of a 9x13 pan.  Continue to fill tortillas and place in the pan until the whole pan is full of enchiladas.  Next, take the 1/3 filling mix you set aside earlier.  Add the ½ c. milk to it, stir it up, then spread it across the top of the enchiladas.  Sprinkle with cheese and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Chicken and Stuffing {Works great with Turkey too!}
3-4 c. mashed potatoes {instant or fresh}                  1 Box Stuffing Mix {I like Chicken or Cornbread}
Double can of cream of chicken soup                        2 c. cubed cooked chicken
1 c. Sour Cream or plain yogurt                                 1 ½ c. water

Spread potatoes across the bottom of a 9X13 pan.  In Glass bowl, mix stuffing and 1  1/2 C. water and set aside for 5 min.  In another bowl mix -Chicken, double can of Cream of Chicken soup, 1 C. sour Cream.  Spread chicken mixture on top of potatoes and top with stuffing.  Bake 350, 30 min.

Chicken Curry
2 c. cubed chicken                                                    2 cans cr. chicken soup
2 c. shredded cheddar cheese                                   1 Tbsp. curry
1  Tbsp. lemon juice                                                 2-4 c. prepared rice {depending on your family size}

Mix chicken, cr. chicken soup, cheese, curry, and lemon juice together, then pour into a smaller baking dish {I usually use my Pyrex baking dish {2.8 liter} that has the higher sides.  Cover with lid and bake 350, 30 min.  Serve over rice.

Poppy Seed Chicken
2 c. cubed cooked chicken                                        1 box Rice-A-Roni or 2 cups Prepared Rice
1 can of cream of chicken soup                                  1 c. Sour Cream or Plain Yogurt
2 rows of Ritz Crackers                                             1 c. melted Margarine or Butter
1 Tbsp. poppy seeds {Optional :0}

Cook rice-a-roni or 1 cup rice(2 cups prepared).  When cooked add 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1 cup sour cream and chicken.  Pour in 9 X 13 pan.  Use a separate bowl to melt 1 c. margarine or butter.  Crunch two rows of Ritz type crackers and pour them into the butter.  {I don't open the package, I hold one end of the row of crackers in one hand and one end in the other hand then push my two hands together compressing all of the crackers. It crushes them and keeps it all in the bag.  I crush both, then open both and pour them in at the same time so they soak up the butter equally.  It probably doesn't matter, I know, but I am strange that way}.  Stir in 1 Tablespoon of poppy seeds and spread crackers over rice mixture.  Bake 350, 30 min.

Crock pot chicken
{can make with raw chicken in crockpot, or use cooked chicken and make it in saucepan on the stove}
3-4 raw chicken breasts depending on size, or use      2 c. cubed chicken
1 can of cream of chicken soup                                  8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 pkg Italian Dressing Mix {Ranch works great}        1 box Rotini noodles prepared
{I also like to add ½ c. Sour Cream, plain yogurt, or milk to thin down the sauce a bit}

Combine cr. chicken soup, cream cheese, dressing mix in the crockpot or sauce pan.  Add chicken.  If you are using the crockpot method, heat on high for 4 hours or low for 8.  For the cooked chicken on the stove top method, simply heat until warmed through.  Serve over prepared noodles.

Hawaiian Haystacks
2 c. cubed chicken                                                    2 cans Cr. chicken soup
1 c. chicken broth                                                     ½ c. Sour Cream or plain yogurt

Combine in a sauce pan until sauce is heated through

Toppings:  Frozen peas {thawed}, shredded cheese, chow mien noodles, pineapple chunks, almond slivers, diced tomatoes, diced green onions.  {mandarin oranges or coconut can also be nice for the Hawaiian effect :0}
            Serve on rice.  To assemble, dish up an appropriate amount of rice, ladle sauce over the rice, then add your toppings on top.  Enjoy!

Momma’s Meatloaf
2 lbs. hamburger                                                         2 eggs
1 lb. sausage                                                               1 row saltine crackers, crushed to crumbs
1 bottle barbeque sauce

Mix both meats, eggs, cracker crumbs together in a large bowl.  Shape into a loaf form, then spread barbeque sauce on top.  Bake at 350 for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Tatertot casserole
2c. browned hamburger                                             1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 bag frozen tatertots                                                 ½ c. shredded cheddar cheese
*Optional- 1 can green beans

Line bottom of 9x13 pan with tatertots.  Mix cr. mushroom and hamburger in a separate bowl {add green beans here if desired}.  Spread meat mixture on top of tots.  Cover with cheese or leave off to reduce calories or cheese consumption.  Bake at 350 for 30 min.

Stroganoff
2c. browned hamburger                                             2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 c. sour cream                                                           1 packet onion soup mix
1 pkg prepared noodles

Mix cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, packet onion soup mix, and hamburger in a saucepan over medium-medium high heat.  Heat through and serve over noodles. {You can make this casserole style, pour cooked noodles in pan, cover with sauce and freeze}

Lasagna Casserole
2c. browned hamburger                                             1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 pint cottage cheese                                                 2 c. shredded mozzarella {or cheddar}
2 tsp. sugar, various seasonings to taste                    prepared noodles

Boil Macaroni.  Drain water off macaroni, put back in the pot and add: crushed tomatoes, cottage cheese, hamburger, cheese, {*optional} about a 2 tsp. of sugar to take the tartness out of the tomato, and salt and pepper to taste.  {I usually throw in some of the garlic seasoning from Costco with the sugar, you could sprinkle in some Italian seasoning and Parmesan too if you want}.  Pour in a 9 x 13 pan, top with cheese.  Bake at 350 for 30 min.

Fireman tacos
2 c. browned hamburger                                Taco fixings, like beans, sour cream, cheese, salsa, lime juice, lettuce                                                                        Corn chips

Take a handful of chips and place them on your plate.  Crush them with your hand until they are very small pieces of chip.  Add your choice of toppings, then stir it all up.  My family calls these Fireman tacos cause you can eat them in a hurry.  Great for feeding a large or picky crowd.  Everyone can pick their own toppings.

Don’t forget Breakfast  for dinner! Eggs and hashbrowns, pancakes, omelet, breakfast burrito, or whatever

Baked potatoes-  Bake potatoes- I like to use the microwave to cook them in about 10 minutes.  Top with chili, cottage cheese, broccoli, etc.

Taco Soup
1 lb. browned ground beef                                                     1 no. 10 can crushed or diced tomatoes
2 cans light kidney beans                                                        1 small bag frozen corn
1 packet taco seasoning

Throw it all in a pot.  Bring to a boil.  Serve with Fritos or tortilla chips crushed on top.

Baked Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
1 1/2 cups milk                                                           4 T. melted butter
2 large eggs                                                                2 T. sugar
2 cups flour                                                                 4 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease an 11×17 inch jellyroll pan. In a large mixing bowl, beat together milk, butter and egg. Add sugar, then gradually beat the flour in. Carefully stir in the baking powder and salt. Pour batter into prepared pan. Squeeze out swirls of Cinnamon Roll Filling over pancake batter.  Bake in 350 degree oven for 8-9 minutes until center is set and does not give when pressed with your finger. Remove from oven and drizzle with Maple Cream Cheese Drizzle. Serve immediately. Makes 12 large pancakes.
Cinnamon Roll Filling
4 T. melted butter                                                       3/4 cup brown sugar
2 T. cinnamon
In a small bowl mix filling ingredients together until blended well. Place in a pastry bag or plastic ziptop bag and snip corner to swirl over pancake batter.

Maple Cream Cheese Drizzle
2 ounces cream cheese, softened                              1 cup powdered sugar
2 T. good maple syrup                                                            milk
Mix the first three ingredients in a bowl until smooth, dripping in small amounts of milk until mixture is a drizzling consistency. I like to place mine in a pastry bag and drizzle that way.

Tortilla Stack
2 c. cooked chicken, diced                                          1 can refried beans
2 c. shredded cheese                                                  1 c. corn pieces {optional}
2/3 c. sour cream                                                       1 packet taco seasoning
1 can sliced olives                                                       2 diced tomatoes
½ c. sliced green onions                                             4 large flour tortillas

Mix 1/3 c. sour cream with 1 Tbs. taco seasoning and set aside.  Also set aside about 2 Tbs. of tomato and olive pieces.  Mix remaining sour cream and taco seasoning with the beans, corn, and chicken in another bowl.  Take a cookie sheet, place one tortilla on the pan.  Spread 1/3 of the bean/chicken mixture on the tortilla.  Sprinkle 1/3 of remaining the tomatoes, onion, and olives on the bean mixture.  Sprinkle with cheese, then add another tortilla and repeat the layers.  When you have three layers, take your last tortilla, place on top and then either brush with 1 Tbs. of cooking oil or spray with Pam spray.  Bake for 25 at 350.  Remove the tortilla stack from the oven, spread sour cream/taco seasoning mixture on top, then sprinkle with olives and tomatoes.  Cut with a serrated knife.

Last Minute Lessons :0)

OK, I know this is a little late, but I am teaching my girls tomorrow about "Why we have Adversity"
The lesson suggests reading through the various chapters or verses above, examining the women's lives, and determining how their example can help us to handle adversity.

Here are the printouts I made to go along with the lesson.  I asked girls ahead of time to read the scriptures, then come to class ready to share a summary of what they read and how they were inspired to apply the example in their own life.

I also made this card so the girls can take a minute to reflect on adversity they have already had and how that experience has made them more ready to handle further challenges   I have little mirrors to glue in the spot where the pictures were for the other cards.

I hope the girls get a lot out of this lesson!
I have the file for you HERE with Dropbox if you want it :0)

Novelty Print Quilt Pattern

I have had a hard time finding good quilt patterns for novelty prints the past couple times I purchased them.  I made up this pattern so tha...
