Jean Tutu-torial

Sienna was a beautiful model of her mother's latest creation.  My friend Whitney came over for a little craft time today.  She saw a darling little girl at the park wearing one of these jean tutus, and just had to make Sienna one for her 2nd birthday.  Here is what we started out with:
One old  pair of jeans.  We each picked up a pair for $1.50 at, you guessed it, half-price Saturday at Goodwill.  Whitney used about 1 1/4 yds of tule and about 3 yds of ribbon to line the top layer with.  We cut the tule to 10" wide x 1 1/4yd long, folded it in half lengthwise (so it measured 5" tall) and ran it through my ruffler foot to, yup, ruffle it!

There was some discussion as to wether to cut the jeans off just below the pockets, or to leave some leg, (sewing the skirt to the outside and leaving the shorts on the inside).  We finally decided on making the pants short-shorts, and use a marker to draw where the skirt should go.  That gave us a sewing line.  I serged the shorts, rather than hemming.  Here is Whitney attatching the tule skirt.  We made enough fluff to go around the shorts twice.  Instead of going around twice, we sewed two layers of tule on at the same time.  When that was done, Whitney sewed the ribbon onto the top layer of tule.  In this case, there were just a few inches of ribbon left over.  Whew!  Close, but enough!

Here she is!  Whitney's creation-the jean tutu!  And here is another look at darling Sienna trying it on!
And, of course, the fluffy bum!
Thanks Whitney and Sienna for letting us help in your project!
